O Bruni I am fine! O Bruni how are you?

Akwaaba:Welcome

Well internet world I have safely arrived and settled in to my new home in Cape Cost Ghana!!!! My journey here was quiet the treck and I can't even imagine taking a boat to get here back in the day!!!! A short summary of my journey; left Bloomington at 3 am to make my 6 am flight, then I landed in the very lovely Toronto airport for a 3 hour layover where I enjoyed their super high-tech free internet cafe, then off to my 15 hour flight to Addis Adaba which was a very confusing landing. I ended up in a hotel that I did not book, but I got free meals and kinda sorta wifi, then 24-hours later I was back on a plane for 5 hours to land in Accra, Ghana. From here things got really interesting! My volunteer coordinator advise me to be as fast as possible at the airport and I was! You would have thought I was in the amazing race or something power walking with my luggage to make it first to customs. I had almost passed customs with no problems until the officer wanted to be my "friend" and have my phone number!!!! I was worried if I said no he wouldn't let me into to country so I said sure. (Sorry Eric, I won't be calling) Then I waited for my luggage, I now have a suitcase with no handle. After making it through the declaration room I waited for my ride from Global Mamas employee Hubert to pick me up. We walked to a taxi then went quickly through the city which was so busy and full of people! We almost got hit by another car, said some harsh words and moved on. Then we stopped at the market to get into a "Fast van" to take us to Cape Coast. The poor driver had to unload my suitcases anyone left the van which happened about 3 times :( About 2 hours later we arrived in Cape Coast and got on another taxi to my new home! Eli a wonderfully sweet lady meet me on the road and waked me home. Eli has a smalll restaurant down the street from the volunteer house and she has treated me like her daughter. After a wonderful meal I went to bed. So that is my 3 day journey!!!

First leg of the journey
Second leg

Day 1 Cape Coast

I headed into the city with Eli to meet my new co-workers and get a tour of the city. Esta took me around and was so sweet. She told me I was a sweetheart and her favorite volunteer so far! The city here is much different than home. Lots of small shops run out of homes. The town is beautiful, but has an open sewer system which will take time time to get used to! I ate my first fish with it's head and eyes still attached for lunch and hung out at the Quality Control office. Luckily for me that night my volunteer coordinators boyfriend had arrived at the house and he showed me around the my area. Miles has lived here for 2 years and seems to know everyone in the area. I got to meet some of his friends which are super nice and interesting. Mom you were right again, I already have friends!!!!

Day 2

Miles and I walked to the next city over to a beach resort that his friend is looking after. We just hung out in the sun and I watched the boys make wake-board from hand, super cool. Then that night we went to the 10 year anniversary party for Global Mamas. It was so much fun, and they even announced my name during the ceremony! I am the 499th volunteer woooo hooo!!! I got to meet lots of people and most importantly the founders of Global Mamas, which was so cool!

Day 3

I went back to the resort with some people from the house. It has been a rather rainy day here, but I was able to catch some sun on the beach, I just recently learned that the hotel across the street has wifi so here I am writing my blog! In a bit I'll be off to Eli's for dinner with some of the Global Mamas ladies. Tomorrow will be my first full time day at the office and I'm getting thrown in to design! I can't wait to get started on my projects!

So the name of this blog means; White Lady I am fine, White Lady how are you? The children here are taught this in school and I have been hearing all the time! Or they just say Bruni Bruni Bruni and wave. Totally harmless, they just find it very funny.

Sorry for the lack of pictures, I'm trying my best not to look like a major tourist!

All is well and I am so happy to be here :)
