Irvan Urvan

Happy Wednesday from Yass!

I've been talking about visiting the famous Blue Mountains since I arrived here in Australia and last week I finally made it happen!

Heather and I took her brand spank'n new 1980s camper van out into the wilderness for a two day adventure. A side note, Heather and her mom will be driving this van up the east coast of Australia in two weeks! So cool! So this was big Irvs first test out on the road. Despite the crazy steep hills and hair pin turns he did well.

We started our journey late Wednesday evening, and arrived in at a funny hostel in the town of Katoomba. The woman who checked us in didn't really seem to know what was going on, but we ended up in a very well lite room ( thanks for that eye mask Karen Pacific, it went to good use!). After some instant coffee, fried eggs and brownies for breakfast we were ready to explore! I've leaned that Pinterest is a great way to plan a trip, so we headed to these waterfalls that I had seen cool pictures of. Pinterest wasn't lieing, they were beautiful! We ended up taking a little unplanned hike that gave us great views of the mountain range. They are called the Blue Mountains from the eucalyptus trees, which put off a blue haze. Lucky us we had great weather and the mountains did look blue! After a nice coffee in the cute Art Deco town, Lerua we headed to the ultra famous Three Sisters. I would suggest just googling the story of the rocks so I don't butcher it! Some other highlights of the day were; having lunch with a Kookaburra, seeing black cockatoos, and riding the steepest inclined roller coaster in the world! That night we camped in the van at this amazing look out called Perry's look down. We caught the sunset and had a great show from the valley birds. I should specify that we were really glamping. We cooked dinner on a protable stove, drank wine (cheap boxed wine) and even watched a movie!!!

To our surprise we managed to sleep in till 8 and didn't wake up half frozen. Heather cooked me some beans on toast for breakfast, and we were back on the road. Day two we headed to the Jenolan Caves, some the oldest and largest limestone caves in the world! The drive there was slightly terrifying, but good ol Irv didn't let us down (literally this road was crazy steep). Following suite to my walking experience Heather and I ended us taking a wrong path on our hike and ended up on top of this massive hill! The view were pretty amazing on the way up and we saw a super rare bird, the Lyre bird, which kind of looks like a small peacock. After we walked back down our small mountain we looked for some platypus in the Blue lake, but didn't have any luck :( One of the coolest things about Jenolan was that you have to drive through a cave to get to the parking lot! There was also an old hotel there which really gave me the creeps. It felt like the shining! On our drive home we half expected to have a run in with a kangaroo but we got super lucky and didn't hit any! You always have to be on gaurd while driving at night for wild Roos.

It was a really awesome trip, and I'm glad I got experience it in Irvan the Urvan!!! Best of luck on your future adventures Irv.
